James Lamar Mayers

James Lamar Mayers was born on October 5, 1952, in Oak Grove, Louisiana, to the union of Aaron (“Tollie”) Mayers and Ora Lee Riley Mayers. He departed this life on January 3, 2026, in Lake (Brownsville), Mississippi.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron Mayers and Ora Lee Riley Mayers; his beloved wife, Catherine Gilbert Mayers; his brothers, Robert Lewis, Aaron Mayers Jr., Billy Mayers, and George D. Mayers; and his sister, Ruby Gay Mayers Crudup.

James received his education at Combs McIntyre High School in Oak Grove, Louisiana. In his early years, he attended the Church of God in Christ alongside his mother. He later returned to Mississippi, where he lived with his sister Ruby and her family—Lindon, Ann, Faye, Albany (J.R.), Charles, and William—in Forest, Mississippi. James was employed at Poultry Packers and spent much of his life working on farms.

James leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Maurice Mayers (Lucille) and Tyrone Stowers; his daughter, Felicia Hunt; his grandson, Marquise Mayers; and Marquise’s mother, Tonya Wash. He is also survived by his sister, Doctor Ella Jean Davis (Wade) of Detroit, Michigan; his brothers, Herman Mayers of Lake, Mississippi, and Sammy Mayers of Indianapolis, Indiana; his sisters-in-law, Dianna Mayers, Cassandra Wilson, and Mabel Jean Wilson; his brothers-in-law, James Gilbert, Eddie Wilson, and Clift Wilson; a dear friend, Linda Lou Bender; and one aunt, Aretha Riley Gray of Forest, Mississippi, and a host of other nieces, nephews, friends, and family.
